Modality and Discourse Processing

چکیده

Abstract Two self-paced reading time experiments investigated the application of the semantic theories of Discourse Representation Theory (Kamp 1981; see also, Heim 1982) and Modal Subordination (Roberts 1987, 1989) as the basis for a model of discourse processing. The results of Experiment 1 support the empirical contrast as described by Roberts (1987, 1989), that is, that intersentential anaphora is constrained by the scope of modal operators. The results of Experiment 2 suggest that there are processing effects associated with the increased semantic complexity of a semantic representation. By the Minimal Structure Hypothesis, I explain the different processing times associated with different modals. The advantage of this discourse processing model is that it uses grammatical information to rule out incoherent discourses. Thus, the Roberts-Heim-Kamp framework seems to be a promising enterprise for constraining a psycholinguistic theory of discourse processing.

A Comparative Analysis of Epistemic and Root Modality in Two selected English Books in the Field of Applied Linguistics Written by English Native and Iranian Non-native Writers

Academic discourse has always been the focus of many linguists, especially those who have been involved with English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and discourse analysis. Persuasion, as part of rhetorical structure of academic writing, is partly achieved by employing modality markers.  Adopting a descriptive design, the present study was carried out to compare the use of modality markers in terms...

Why Figurative Language: Perceived Discourse Goals for Metaphors and Similes by L2 Learners

The goal of this study was to investigate the kinds of discourse goals that Iranian EFL learners perceive as the most probable reasons behind the utterance of figurative language, metaphors and similes, with reference to 4 independent variables of Figure Type (Metaphor or Simile), Tenor Concreteness (Concrete or Abstract), Context (List Format or Story), and Modality (Oral, Written, and Both). ...

The activation of modality-specific representations during discourse processing.

Previous research has shown that readers generate mental images of events. Most studies have investigated imagery during the reading of short texts, which also included explicit judgment tasks. In two fMRI studies, we assessed whether modality-specific imagery occurs during naturalistic, discourse comprehension. We identified clauses in the texts that elicited auditory, motor, or visual imagery...

A Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Study of Epistemic Modality Markers in Linguistics Research Articles

Epistemic modality devices are believed to be one of the prominent characteristics of research articles as the commonly used genre among the academic community members. Considering the importance of such devices in producing and comprehending scientific discourse, this study aimed to cross–culturally and cross-linguistically investigate epistemic modality markers as an important subcategory...

An electrophysiological study of mood, modal context, and anaphora.

We investigated whether modal information elicited empirical effects with regard to discourse processing. That is, like tense information, one of the linguistic factors shown to be relevant in organizing a discourse representation is modality, where the mood of an utterance indicates whether or not it is asserted. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were used in order to address the question of the...
